Malone slips into 'Darko' as its love interest

Jena Malone has landed the female lead opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the dramatic fantasy-thriller feature "Donnie Darko." First-time writer-director Richard Kelly will helm the project for Pandora (a finance company), Adam Fields Prods. and Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen's Flower Films. Told through the eyes of a disturbed teenager (Gyllenhaal), "Darko" is said to combine elements of mystical fantasy and science fiction with a teenage romance. Malone plays the role of Gyllenhaal's love interest. In addition, newcomer Alex Greenwald has been cast as Gyllenhaal's antagonistic and abusive schoolmate. Noah Wyle and Barrymore will play teachers.
